Dental Crown
Despite your best efforts to preserve your natural teeth with proper oral hygiene and regular dental visits, you may suffer some damage that compromises the integrity of your teeth. Cavities, cracks or chips, injuries, and root canal treatments can all weaken teeth and render them incapable of performing their normal function. A dental crown is the solution.
In such cases, Fioritto Family Dental can provide you with a custom crown intended to restore full function. Our dentists have the skill and experience to treat your damaged teeth, but we’re also committed to the artistry of crafting crowns that perfectly mimic your natural teeth so as not to disrupt your bite pattern or mar your smile. What are crowns and what can you expect when you get one?
What is a Crown?
A crown is a cap or cover for a damaged tooth. A crown can also be used to replace a missing tooth as part of a bridge, or what we refer to as a partial. When damage is too great for a simple filling to correct, crowns deliver the coverage needed to protect and restore the tooth.
Crowns can be made of a number of materials including; metal alloys, porcelain, ceramic, and composite resin. The materials you choose will depend on several factors such as the location of the tooth, the type and extent of damage to the tooth, visual preference, budget, and so on.
You can generally expect your treatment to take two visits. During the first visit, our dentists will prepare the tooth by removing damaged tissue, shaping remaining tooth tissue, and taking an impression in order to create a custom crown. You’ll receive a temporary crown to protect your tooth until your permanent crown is ready.
Within a couple of weeks, you’ll have a second appointment to place your permanent crown. The crown will be positioned and adjusted to your satisfaction and then cemented in place to restore full function and appearance. With proper care, your crown could last up to fifteen years or more.
Caring for Your Crown
Ensuring the longevity of your crown starts with diligently following a proper oral hygiene regimen. This regimen includes brushing and flossing twice a day to prevent tooth decay and gum disease that could further damage the tooth. Additionally, it is essential to schedule regular dental exams and cleanings with Fioritto Family Dental. This helps to ensure optimal oral health and protect not only your crown, but also your remaining natural teeth. You’ll want to avoid hard foods like ice or candy that could damage your crown.
A crown will restore your smile and optimal oral function. Whether you have a cavity too large to address with a filling, or you’ve suffered trauma that significantly damaged a tooth, our dentists can craft the custom crown you need. Contact Fioritto Family Dental today at 440-951-5511.
