Retainers
Orthodontic braces are the first step toward achieving the beautiful smile and confidence you’ve always wanted. The talented team at Fioritto Family Dental is happy to help you begin the journey. Our goal is to provide every patient with lifelong dental care for optimal oral health and a beautiful smile that lasts a lifetime. For many, retainers may be necessary to ensure results.
Our bodies change all the time, and while modern dentistry and orthodontics can help improve your smile, your teeth may naturally want to return to their prior positioning once your braces are removed. How can you keep them in line, so to speak? The answer is the use of custom dental retainers from Fioritto Family Dental.
How Do Dental Retainers Work?
After your braces have been removed, your teeth will be beautifully cleaned by one of our amazing dental hygienists at Fioritto Family Dental. Thereafter, we’ll fit you for a custom retainer. This removable dental appliance is fashioned from metal wire that fits outside the row of teeth and is attached to a plastic or rubber base that fits into the roof of your mouth, or alternately, the inner edge of your lower jaw, where your tongue rests. Patients sometimes require an upper or lower retainer, or both.
The purpose of a retainer is to make sure your teeth stay in place once your braces have been removed. In most cases, retainers will have to be worn for several years, but often, the need to wear them will wane over time. For example, you may have to wear them day and night for the first six months, but then only at night thereafter. Every patient is different.
The Importance of Wearing Dental Retainers
The reason braces are commonly recommended in early adolescence is because at this age, teeth are still coming in and shifting. This makes it easier to move teeth into a desired position. As we age and our teeth become fixed, movement becomes harder to accomplish, although still very possible.
When braces are removed, teeth may begin to shift back toward their original position. After months or years of wearing braces to straighten your teeth, the last thing you or we want is for your teeth to revert back. Follow the instruction delivered by the experienced team at Fioritto Family Dental, and you won’t have to worry about negative outcomes. Proper use of retainers will keep your teeth properly positioned until they are more permanently ensconced in their new positions.
