Sedation Sleep Dentistry

Sedation/Sleep Dentistry

Children and adults can struggle with fear and anxieties, including dental anxiety.  In some cases, this could prevent you from scheduling regular visits for cleaning, or correcting issues to improve your smile and your confidence.  At Fioritto Family Dental, we’re committed to creating a comfortable and relaxing environment to ensure positive experiences for every patient.  This includes offering sedation dentistry in our suburban Cleveland offices (Mentor and Concord).

Prior to prescribing sedation dentistry, we’ll discuss your health history, complete with information on current medication, health issues, and other pertinent factors.  This will help us to determine if you’re a good candidate for sedation dentistry and which sedation option is right for your needs.

Our trained team of dental professionals delivers safe and effective sedation dentistry to patients suffering from dental anxiety.  This creates an entirely new experience, one in which you relax and enjoy worry-free dental care.  Fioritto Family Dental is pleased to offer three options for sedation dentistry.

Types of Sleep Dentistry Provided in Our Mentor & Concord Offices

Every patient experiences a different level of dental anxiety.  Some patients have no anxiety at all, and are perfectly comfortable undergoing treatment while fully awake and alert.  Some patients experience mild anxiety that disappears when they receive anesthetic to alleviate pain symptoms.

Others experience significant anxiety that reduces their pain threshold and even makes them sensitive to the sound of a drill or other dental instruments..  For this reason, we offer three types of sedation with varying levels of effect.

 – Oral Sedation

Some patients prefer oral sedation because it is taken by mouth, in pill form, as opposed to administered intravenously via the arm.  Oral sedation can take effect within 30-60 minutes and delivers a deep sensation of relaxation.  Patients will remain awake during treatment, but oral sedatives can produce an amnesiac effect which means you may remember very little about the procedure when the effects of the sedation wear off.

– Inhaled Sedation

Inhaled sedation consists of a nitrous oxide and oxygen mixture delivered through a nasal hood, and it induces a feeling of happy relaxation that could be described as euphoric.  You will be awake during treatment, but fully relaxed.  The major benefit of this type of sedation is that it wears off quickly after treatment so you can resume normal activities almost immediately.

– IV Sedation

IV sedation is administered intravenously and takes effect immediately.  Patients will experience a twilight state or even drift off to sleep during procedures and remember little or nothing afterward.

At Fioritto Family Dental, sedation is only administered by trained professionals, and patients are continuously monitored throughout the procedure to ensure safety and effectiveness, as well as optimal comfort.  Keep in mind that you may need someone to drive you to and from your appointment, depending on the sedation dentistry used.
